MATERIALS

Wanting all the materials used here at Ulpan Aviv to reflect their own unique method and style, Gil and Osnat set out to create their own. Our in-house language experts have written extensive range of books and materials; all accompanied with audio tracks.  These materials are used both here in Israel at our Ulpans and sold world-wide to guide self-study.

 

There are many theories of learning with regards to language acquisition and many explanations as to how language is procured.  One thing that is evident from research in this field is that the facilitation of language acquisition is a very personal process.  There are those who find that visual stimulation facilitates their retention of new material and others who prefer auditory or exposition.  All of these aspects have been taken in to consideration whilst developing and updating the library of materials that we use here Ulpan Aviv.  All though there is some common foundation material used in all the beginners' courses, (grammar, verbs, vocabulary etc.), materials are selected according to the individual student's particularities.  The materials that we use here at Ulpan Aviv, not only consist of written materials, but also of multi-media materials such as: MP3 sound tracks, DVD's, current television series, Israeli literature, newspapers etc.

Hebrew learning is divided in to 6 levels of competence with each of the levels being named after one of the letters in the Hebrew 'Aleph Bet': Alef, Bet, Gimel, Dalet, Heh and Vav. The absolute beginner's level is Alef and the most advanced level is Vav.  At Ulpan Aviv, we have the materials and the experience necessary to enable even the most advanced Hebrew speakers to improve their Hebrew.

  • SEFER ALEF-BET

    This text book is generally used in the context of courses for ‘absolute beginners’ and includes the introduction of the Hebrew letters. The target book for this group has no previous experience whatsoever of the Hebrew language. With this group of students, we would start at the very beginning and lay the foundation of the Alef-Bet.

  • SEFER ALEF

    Sefer Alef is generally used in the context of courses for students who are at beginner level. Sefer Aleph provides basic vocabulary and sentence structure common to the Hebrew Language. Initial texts are straight forward and work assignments related to these texts are given to the student. The aim of these texts is to familiarize the student with the language that they will encounter in everyday life and to sensitize them to the language used “on the street” by native Hebrew speakers.

  • SEFER BET

    Sefer Bet was designed for the ‘beginner +’ students. Its aim is to elaborate on the student's vocabulary by exposing him/her to more advanced texts, in turn allowing him/her to speak about a greater variety of topics. Materials in Sefer Bet give students both a firm foundation in comprehension, helping them to deal with longer more involved texts and the skills to converse in more complex situations.

  • SEFER GIMEL

    The Sefer Gimel text book is aimed at the ’intermediate’ level student. Students at this level can master a simple conversation but their speech is not yet fluent and grammar needs to be given more structure. A basic requirement for this group of students is a great deal of exposure to subjects and areas of interest, about which they are able to speak. Sefer Gimel was written with this aim, listing amongst its sections: media, education, nutrition, health, and news.

  • SEFER DALET

    Sefer Dalet was created by the founders of Ulpan Aviv with the ‘advanced level’ student in mind. These students possess sufficient knowledge of grammar and have enough confidence to communicate in a much more elaborate way. An opportunity is now needed for them to be able to express themselves in a more sophisticated manner.

  • SEFER HAPOAL

    Sefer Hapoal is the book in the series that is dedicated to grammar. It exists in two versions, the basic version and a more comprehensive version. The basic version (Sefer Hapoal B) is used with the beginner students whereas the more comprehensive version (Sefer Hapoal A) is used with those who are more advanced.

  • SIHON

    The word ‘Siha’ in Hebrew means ‘conversation’, and the Sihon book is Ulpan Aviv’s conversation manual. In this book the students can find real life situations and are introduced to the language necessary to be able to cope and feel comfortable in these different situations.
