James Pearson

James is a citizen of the United States, who has been volunteering in Israel for 14 years in various different frameworks. These days he volunteers in an institute for the disabled in San Simon, Jerusalem. James came to Israel with his community from Chicago, with a strong desire to change his life path, and to live a life of giving and donating to others. The volunteer visa that he was initially given in Israel was for a very limited time. This time was extended beyond expectations, as each year he requested to extend his stay in Israel, so that he could continue to volunteer here.

Myriam Braunschvig

Myriam Braunschvig currently divides up her time between America, France and Israel. Born into a French-American bilingual household in NYC with Spanish speaking grandparents, Myriam speaks many languages including; French, English, Spanish, Italian and Hebrew. She taught philosophy in Paris, and body-awareness in America, as well as working in experimental theatre and film-making.

Alessandro Zanoni

Alessandro Zanoni (30) was born in Italy and has been living in China for the past 10 years. He works in the human resources field, which requires a lot of his time and effort. Alessandro already had language skills as he studied languages in Italy, and he speaks four other languages besides Hebrew.

Sung-chul cho (31) arrived in Israel from South Korea on behalf of the company Samsung. He works in Israel as a regional expert and has to devise new technological ideas. He came with two colleagues and they have lived here together for more than half a year.

Michael Aharon Gestetner

chael Aharon Gestetner, or Ari as he is known in Israel, was born in Australia and lived in Sydney until very recently. In 2012 Ari decided that it was the right time for him to make the big move to Israel, and alongside his mother, he made aliyah, saying goodbye to two of his brothers in Australia. Ari has one brother who lives in Jerusalem with his wife and nine children, ensuring that Ari received a warm welcome when he arrived in Israel.

Lilian Steinberg

Lilian was born in Belgium and made aliyah in October 2011. After being in Israel for just half a year, she decided that this was the only place she wanted to live in. 
When Lillian went to university, she studied Translation, with the goal of working in this field. In the end, however, she entered her family business and started working with them in the diamond business.

Susan Wazwuz

Susan is in her 20’s, from Jerusalem, and is studying to become a doctor. Susan came to Ulpan Aviv with the goal of improving her Hebrew so that she can take her internship in medicine in an Israeli hospital as easily as possible (usually, hospitals in Israel require level Gimel of Hebrew in order to accept doctors and nurses. Applicants are interviewed by a team of doctors and need to show fluency and self confidence while speaking).

Joseph Shamash

Joseph, like his biblical namesake, is a colourful character. He works in film and television and originates from Los Angeles. He, like many of our students came to us after a recommendation from a fellow student at Pardes (a yeshiva for students of all denominations and backgrounds based in Jerusalem).

Joan Burstyn

Joan originates from the USA and is a respected Professor, author and poet. She arrived in Israel to visit her children who live in and around Jerusalem and came to Ulpan Aviv with a desire to speak Hebrew in order to talk and tell stories to her Israeli grandchildren. Joan arrived at our Ulpan with her daughter Judith and together they proved to be fantastic students.

Robert Bloom

Robert (Rob) Bloom is a 23 year old student from Leeds, UK. He is a self-employed electrician and building contractor who came to Israel on 2011 for a Birthright trip with the Jewish Agency. During and after the trip, Rob's interest in Israel and in Hebrew increased and shortly after the trip he applied to Ulpan Aviv.

Alicja Tandeka

Alicja first came to Ulpan Aviv in December 2011. The connection was made through the Ulpan Aviv Facebook page in which Alicja actively participated. Finally, she decided to come for a first attempt at learning Hebrew in Israel.

Joe Dwek

Joe and his wife arrived in Israel a year ago following his employment at the Jerusalem Foundation. The Jerusalem Foundation supports the growth of Jerusalem as a pluralistic, tolerant and cultural society and despite his work being primarily in English, Joe was anxious to learn the Hebrew language in order integrate in to Israeli society.

Chris Zalman left his home and family in New Jersey to make Aliya and to join the army. He came to Israel as part of a MASA programme whereby post-high school teenagers from America live together in shared appartments in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv and volunteer in schools amongst other places.

Bram Kortums

Coming from Holland with no previous knowledge of Hebrew, Bram started to study with Ulpan Aviv in August of this year. Bram lives in Southern Israel, on a Kibutz next to Ashkelon and has been travelling the not so short distance between Askelon and our TLV branch in order to study 3 times a week. Staring with getting to know the Alef-Beit and moving on to sentence structure and conversational skills, Bram was also introduced to Hebrew grammar.

Ludoviko (Ludo) Ludigiany

Ludoviko (Ludo) Ludigiany is an air steward from Italy, who takes advantage of his holidays to come to Israel, and, in the last few months to also learn Hebrew at the same time. Although he is not Jewish, Ludo is very connected to Israel and the Hebrew language and shows this with a Star of David around his neck.

Ruth Fazal

Ruth Fazal is a musician (violinist primarily) from Canada who started to study with Ulpan Aviv in June 2010. We can all remember the day when Ruth entered the Ulpan, eyes full of passion to learn.
